Where the positions come from
Ship positions are AIS reports. Each ship shows the time of its own last report: nothing is moved beyond it.
A ship is linked to a timetabled sailing only when our matching sees it making that crossing. Base map: © OpenStreetMap contributors, OpenMapTiles, OpenFreeMap.
Questions about the map
Why are some ships grey?
Grey means no timetabled sailing is linked to the ship: AIS shows where it is, but we don’t know which crossing it is making, so we say nothing about its punctuality.
Is a green ship on time?
Only a measurement makes a ship green: a departure detected by AIS or reported by the operator, at most 5 minutes after the timetable. Without a measurement a ship on a known sailing is blue.
Why are some ships dashed and faded?
Their last AIS position is more than 5 minutes old. After 2 hours without a new position a ship disappears from the map.
How often does the map update?
While the page is open and visible it asks for new positions every 10 seconds, by itself; it stops while the tab is hidden. If no new position arrives for a while, the strip above the map says so.
What the map covers
The map covers 18 sea areas in France, the United Kingdom, Spain and Denmark. In the last 30 days we received AIS positions from 1,863 ships in the sea areas we cover. We know the operator of 116 of them, and 115 were linked to timetabled sailings.
387 of the 433 routes we list start from a port inside these areas.
