Cookie policy: Google's cookies only with your consent, and what stays in your browser
Cookies: only Google Analytics, and only with your consent
ferrywhere sets no cookies of its own. The only cookies are those of Google Analytics, to measure visits, and they are set only after you click “Accept” in the site's banner. Until you choose, or if you refuse, Google Analytics is not loaded at all.
- _ga and _ga_<ID> (Google Analytics): tell visits and sessions apart. Only with your consent; they last 2 years.
Your consent
The banner appears at the bottom of the page on your first visit and stays until you choose; refusing is as easy as accepting. Your choice is kept in your browser's localStorage (see below), not in a cookie. To change or withdraw it, use “Cookie settings” at the bottom of every page: if you withdraw consent, Google Analytics stops straight away and the site deletes the _ga cookies. Clearing this site's data in your browser settings also brings the banner back.
How Google uses this data: policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
Storage in your browser
The site keeps a few items in your browser's localStorage, and only when you do something that needs them. They are not used to recognise you or to measure your visit. If you do none of these things, nothing is stored; to remove everything, clear this site's data in your browser settings.
- Saved items: the routes, ports and ships you save.
- Recent searches: the last 5 results you opened from the search box.
- Automatic updates: only if you pause the automatic refresh of live data.
- Keyboard shortcut: only if you switch off the “/” key that opens the search.
- Cookie choice: whether you accepted or refused Google Analytics, so the banner doesn't come back at every visit.
Maps
Maps are loaded from tiles.openfreemap.org (OpenFreeMap). We don't ask that service to store anything on your device, and when we last checked (29 September 2026) its responses set no cookies.
If this changes
If the site ever needs other cookies that aren't strictly necessary (for example for advertising), you will be asked for consent first, and this page will list them. More on the data we process in the privacy policy.
